Where Does Brenden Aaronson Fit in the USMNT?

With the USMNT squad for the November Camp coming out today, I wanted to talk about 20-year old Brenden Aaronson. We all know he is an extremely exciting talent. He has regularly started for the Philadelphia Union since he was 18 years old, is now one of the key players on the top team in the league, and of course, just made a $6 million move to RedBull Salzburg. Yet, everyone seems unsure as to where he stands with the national team.

For me, I believe Brenden needs to be with the USMNT (First Team) at all times. Now the MLS Playoffs may stop him from being with them in November, but after that there is no reason for him to not be at every camp. He will be in Austria come January where I really see his game vastly improving. He may struggle initially with the speed of play in Europe, but he certainly has the technical ability to raise his game to compete with those around him. In addition to that, I think Salzburg’s fast tempo style of play will suit Brenden well. Also, I have seen Brenden’s drive and work ethic first hand, and it is absolutely second to none. (Being with Jesse Marsch is also a little Cherry on top)

So, with all that being said, why do I think Brenden needs to be with the USMNT all the time going forward? Well for me, he is too good for the U23’s. He will not be pushed the way he needs to be at that level. I understand that right now, Brenden doesn’t get into the USMNT midfield. Realistically, Gio Reyna has his spot at the 10, but Brenden has the ability to play at the same level as Gio, Tyler, Christian, and Weston; and its vital he is in training and being challenged by them. The more he’s around those guys, the more he will improve, and the hungrier he will be to get his spot in the starting XI. I also think being with those guys and learning/taking advice from them, could help Brenden succeed at the club level as a new young American in Europe. If he is left with the U23’s, sure he will standout and look very good, but it is not the best idea for his long term development. Even if he is not playing right away, Brenden Aaronson deserves to be, and needs to be in all the USMNT camps going forward.
